Can Electric Motorcycles Shock You in the Rain?

Oct 27, 2021

Are you scared of riding your electric motorcycle in the rain, fearing it may shock you? Here’s our answer to that.

electric shock

Those who have recently transitioned or are still considering shifting to electric motorcycles would often have one concern—will they be able to enjoy their bikes while it’s raining. This concern is valid, especially during the rainy season

It’s undeniable that electricity and water don’t go well together. For this reason, some new users would think they can’t use their electric bikes when it’s raining or snowing. So, what’s the answer to the question, “can electric motorcycles shock you in the rain?” It won’t. Your bike won’t become a lightning bolt the moment you rev it up on the road. In fact, you can even charge your electric motorcycle even while it’s raining. But, of course, it’s still advisable to protect your charger when it’s raining.

However, there are certain precautions that you must keep in mind when riding out in the rain.

Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant

While you can definitely use your electric motorcycle in the rain because it’s relatively water-resistant, you also have to understand that it’s not waterproof. Think about it as your smartphone. You may not be discouraged from using it in the rain because you know it’s water-resistant. However, you won’t keep using it for a more extended period because you’ll be concerned about how water can easily seep into the electric ports that may damage your phone.

The same thing is true for your electric motorcycles. When you drive it into the rain, you don’t have to worry about electric shock. However, you should be concerned about submerging them into deep puddles of water. Again, not because it will cause electric shock but because it can significantly affect the bike’s components. Remember, any vehicle with long-term exposure to water will have serious problems.

Using the Electric Motorcycle in the Rain

As mentioned, electric shock should not be a major concern when riding under the rain or on a wet road surface. Most electric motorcycles are built with a design that helps them keep rain and spray out of the electrics.

Here’s a video to show you that you can use Evoke Electric Motorcycles even while it’s raining.

You don ’t even have to worry about not being able to access the touchscreen, as Evoke has ensured that the bike is equipped with a resistive touchscreen that allows riders to operate it even while wearing gloves or when driving under rain or snow.

Here are some tips to help protect your electric motorcycle in the rain:

  • Park it in a safe location where it won’t be submerged in water.
  • Always charge in a dry area. If you need to charge in the rain, protect the charger and make sure that it has an IP56 rating at the very least.
  • Dry your electric motorcycle immediately after riding in the rain.
