Cruising down the highway with the wind blowing gives a different kind of adrenaline rush. We get you. But, a lot can change with this experience when your handlebar grip no longer functions the same. It can get slippery and tire you when you’re out on a long drive.

When To Change the Handlebar Grips

Change the handlebar grip of your Evoke Urban Classic motorcycle if you notice any of the following signs:

  • Worn or damaged grip surface: Over time, the handlebar’s grip surface can become worn out, torn, or cracked. When this happens, it will become difficult for you to securely grip the handlebar. This can be pretty tricky when riding in bad weather.

  • Loose or slipping grip: The grip should provide the friction to give you that good hold on your handlebars. Once it feels slippery, it can become a riding hazard. Slippery grip can make it challenging for you to control the motorcycle, specifically when making sharp turns or sudden stops.

  • Faded or discolored grip: While not a critical factor for safety, a discolored grip can impact your motorcycle’s appearance. Constant exposure to sun and other elements can cause color to fade or change. It will not affect your Urban Classic’s performance but it can make your bike look worn.

  • Smelly or dirty grip: During motorcycle maintenance, the grip is one that should undergo regular cleaning as well. It can become a breeding ground for germs. Once the grip becomes smelly and difficult to clean, it might be best to replace. Moreover, a dirty grip will make it hard for you to securely grip the handlebar.

Guide to Changing the Handlebar Grip

So, you might be thinking of changing your handlebar grip on your Urban Classic. Here’s everything you need to know.

Materials needed:

Step 1: Remove the old grip

Find the end of the grip closest to the handlebar end. It is where it’s often glued or taped in place. You may use scissors or a utility knife to cut the old grip. Take note that you may cut through the adhesive tape keeping the grip in place.

Should the grip be tricky to remove, use pliers or a grip removal tool to pull it from the handlebar.

Step 2: Clean the handlebar

After removing the old grip, thoroughly clean the handlebar. Remove dirt or any debris that will impact the installation of the new grip.

Step 3: Apply adhesive or grip glue

Once the handlebar is clean, spray an adhesive or place the grip glue inside the new grip. Spread the adhesive evenly.

Step 4: Install the new grip

Carefully slide the new grip, starting at the end where the old grip was removed. Push the grip all the way until you can feel that it is snug in place.

Adjust the grip position. Align it with the other grip and the brake and throttle controls.

Step 5: Allow the adhesive or glue to dry

Let the glue dry before using your motorcycle. It should take a few minutes depending on the glue used.

There you have it. Follow these simple steps to replace your old and worn out handlebar grip on your Evoke Urban Classic electric motorcycle. Before you know it, you’re already enjoying another ride.
