Electric Motorcycle for Long-Distance Ride: What You Need to Know

Oct 18, 2021

Still think it’s not possible to use electric motorcycles for long-distance trips? It’s not as hard as you think.

Many new electric motorcycle owners think that their bikes aren’t made for long-distance rides. One of the main concerns is the issue of charging the batteries, which could negatively impact their riding experience. However, with the growing shift to sustainable commuting and investments in electric vehicles (EVs), charging infrastructure is also rapidly improving the riding experience of electric vehicle owners.

In the US alone, their public charger infrastructure has already breached 100,000 units, according to the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuel Data Center report. An announcement also highlighted that the 5th round of “Alternative Fuel Corridors” designation included several areas of 119 Interstates and 100 US highways and state roads to have charging facilities

Similarly, continuous funding for fast EV chargers will mean it’s no longer impossible for electric motorcycle riders to go on long-distance rides.

Enjoying a Long-Distance Ride with Your Electric Motorcycle

So, if you’re thinking about going on a trip of a lifetime, here’s what you should know about taking long-distance rides with your electric motorcycle.

Check Your Motorcycle Power

Before starting your long-distance ride, make sure that your electric motorcycle has enough power to explore the open road. In regular motorcycles, you need more than a 750cc engine to fully enjoy cruising the highway at speeds. However, when it comes to electric motorcycles, you have to make sure that it has a powerful battery pack that can give it an excellent top speed and a long range

Evoke’s Urban Series 6061-XR, for example, can help you hit the open road with 120kW of power and over 240 km of highway range. To top it off, its battery back only needs 15 minutes of charging time to get you back on the road with no sweat to break.

Plan Your Ride

One of the basic things you should do before you ride out is to plan your route. Locate where the charging stations are and how far out they are from each other. This way, you can identify at which stations you should charge your bike. Most electric motorcycles would give you 25 km of range for every charging minute. Factor that in when planning your route. Make sure you grab a bite as you charge your bike.

While planning your route, it would also be wise to check out the weather. While electric motorcycles can withstand heavy rains, it would still be a much better option if you could ride without worrying about torrential rains.

Accommodation is another factor to consider for a long-distance ride. If your trip will require you to sleep over, book your accommodation before you leave. It can be unfortunate to ride into an unfamiliar town with no lodging.

Check Your Motorcycle

As any responsible rider, you have to ensure that your electric motorcycle is ready for a long-distance ride. Take the time to see if everything is functioning well. Do check if your tires and brakes are all working well. Don’t forget to check if there are system updates that you need to download to ensure that you’ll have a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

Enjoy the Ride

One thing to remember about taking long-distance rides with your electric motorcycle is to enjoy every minute of it. Consider each road you take as an opportunity to realize how beautiful the world is. Ride safely!
