Data logging for electric vehicles offers numerous benefits. Firstly, it enables vehicle owners and enthusiasts to comprehensively analyse and evaluate their vehicle's performance. By recording essential parameters such as engine RPM, speed, throttle position, and braking force, among others, data logging facilitates the identification of areas for improvement, fine-tuning of vehicle settings, and tracking of performance changes over time. Furthermore, data logging serves as a valuable diagnostic and troubleshooting tool, providing crucial information about sensor readings, error codes, and system behaviour during specific events or conditions. This empowers mechanics and vehicle owners to identify problems accurately and make informed decisions regarding repairs or maintenance.

For performance enthusiasts, data logging allows customization and optimization of vehicle settings, as continuous monitoring and logging of performance data enable precise fine-tuning of engine parameters, suspension settings, and other components. This approach helps achieve desired performance characteristics while maximizing efficiency. Importantly, data logging contributes to safety by providing insights into driver behaviour and vehicle performance, recording data related to acceleration, braking, speed, and other parameters. When it comes to Evoke Motorcycles, collected data is used for identifying errors and potential areas of improvement in prototypes and other models. If an error or an abnormality comes up in the data, it can be easily noticed and traced to its origin, helping identify the root of the problem. Furthermore, using data brings valuable insights into driver behaviour and its variety. If one behaviour is more prevalent than the other, or there are many, the design or parameters can be manipulated to better suit the driver and make the driving experience much more pleasant and comfortable. In the future, data analytics are planned to be shifted in the hands of AI/ML providing instantaneous criteria and analysis on the go, as the data is being collected. This will fully automate the process and result in much more detailed diagnostics once the AI is sufficiently trained on the past data processes.

All of the data is collected and stored within the vehicle, as this surpasses the limitation of servers. If the data is stored within a server in one country, a user in the other might not be able to access it. If the data is stored inside the Evoke motorcycle itself, the user can access it at any point and maintains full control of their own riding data. If there are any issues with the electric motorcycle, or the user would like to understand their riding data better, it can be easily sent to Evoke for review, bypassing any geopolitical limitations that would be otherwise present with the use of servers. The vehicle records up to 10 hours of riding data and is collected every 0.5 seconds. As of 2024, the 120 collected data points make up the five main data pools:

Here are some of the graphed data points on a sample ride to help users and people who are interested, analyse how the data is used. This data is crucial for Evoke Motorcycles to use when it comes to preventative maintenance and/or improving the vehicle’s range and the drivers riding experience. The data shown was collected as a result of a test drive of a prototype model M1 across the city scape of Beijing for the duration of 29 minutes. The driver weight was roughly 75kg.

Data like this helps us to better understand riders and riding habits, unique terrain and elevation, and localized temperatures that allows us to develop better electric motorcycles for the growing market. It can also serve as a valuable tool to assist our customers and dealers with preventative maintenance and provide insight to faults or issues that arise during ownership of an Evoke Motorcycle.

Electric Everything: US-Bound Evoke 6061-GT Gets 140 Miles on a Single Charge

Earlier today, Electrek ’s Micah Toll covered an electric cruiser set to debut to America’s market with a 410-mile charge range – you heard right.

For reference, the bike with the longest range in Zero’s lineup – the Zero SR ZF14.4 – touts a 223-mile range for city streets.

Has America just met her new number-one electric cruiser contender?

Back when the 6061-GT was still a concept, the company said that 15 minutes of charge would get 80% of performance, with 100% getting 292 miles of range in the city . The news accompanied the novelty of relaxed ergonomics in an electric motorcycle frame – a rarity these days, considering the current hype for Adventure bikes and the drive to dive into a motocross machine or two .

Today, we know the 2024 6061-GT to take 30 minutes before reaching 80% capacity, unless you buy an an upgrade package called the 6061-XR – a kit that uses an ultra-fast DC charger, coupled with a more aggresive cooling system, to juice up in in 15 minutes.

By the way, this bike has “the largest lithium-ion battery pack (29.7 kWh) on any electric motorcycle to date,” so don’t expect heft to rank any lower than 700lbs; further specs include a 120hp heart capable of a 125mph top speed, the latter likely contributing to the bike’s sweet range stats.

We expect the Evoke 6061-GT to go for around $29,995 USD, with available liveries including “Obsidian Black” and “Arctic White;” while we both wait for the “TBD” sticker to resolve on the cruiser’s arrival to US shores, what do you think of Evoke’s new electric cruiser?

Jackshafts in EVs

Vehicles, that run with combustion engines or ICEs rely on a jackshaft to efficiently distribute the produced power or simply optimise the conversion of energy to the wheels of the vehicle. ICEs cannot automatically regulate the speed of their rotation. In order to control it, different gears are introduced, to be able to increase and decrease the torque. If the jackshaft is part of a transmission system, it may have multiple gears or pulleys of different sizes attached to it. These gears or pulleys can have different ratios, allowing for torque conversion or speed adjustment.

Gear ratio can be calculated via the formula below:

(Gear ratio = # of teeth on the gear attached to the motor / # of teeth on the gear on the receiving end of the chain)

Flexibility of gear ratios:

Since all motors work best at a particular rotation speed, be it ICEs or EVs, adjusting the gear ratio will help the drivetrain match the motor's optimal operating range to the desired vehicle speed. Especially important in urban environments, where higher speeds are off limits. Additionally, by adjusting the gear ratios or pulley sizes allows for the conversion of kinetic energy during deceleration into electrical energy to recharge the battery, called regenerative braking. By adjusting the size or position of the pulleys, you can vary the speed at which the motor rotates, consequently controlling the energy production.

In our newest model, the motor used spins at a 6000 rpm. To synchronise the wheels with the initial spin, the gear ratio was made to be 6:1 with the help of a jackshaft, which makes it the optimal ratio that enhances and put the bike’s performance onto a new level.

Space Optimization:

In certain cases, the electric motor may not be located directly in line with the rear wheel, thereby causing chain tension issues as the swingarm moves through its arc. A jackshaft can be used as an intermediary step to transfer rotational motion from the motor to the wheels in a more natural path, allowing for more flexibility in motor placement within the vehicle chassis or drivetrain assembly. With the motor placed in a more "out of the way" area, it allows our newest platform to easily fit in 6 - 10kWh into the platform. Moreover, in some cases, introduction of a jackshaft helps eliminate design complications. It can be placed right over or under the motor, without needing to redesign or reposition any obscuring mechanical and electrical parts. Such can be seen in the photo below:

Loss of energy:

Any component in a drivetrain introduces energy losses due to friction and other mechanical inefficiencies. The introduction of a jackshaft can contribute to these losses, which can range from 1% to 5% of the overall power usage, reducing overall drivetrain efficiency and potentially impacting the vehicle's range and energy consumption.

Additional weight:

Though arguably insignificant, a jackshaft adds a few hundred grams of mass to the overall weight of the vehicle. This is rather negligible in electric cars but is noticeable in electric bikes. This can impact the vehicle’s centre of mass and manoeuvrability.

Complexity:

Introduction of multiple belts/chains and the jackshaft parts into a drivetrain slightly increases the overall maintenance cost, potential points of failure, and complexity of the whole mechanism.

In conclusion, implementation of a jackshaft in an electric vehicle opens many new possibilities for optimisation and control over the electrical motor itself, and maximizes battery space and therefore range, which is arguabily the most important factor when it comes to electric motorcycles.

For many, particularly those living in urban areas, the sound of a moving vehicle has become part of their daily lives. In an era where electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming commonplace, it might be time to brace for a city with quiet streets. However, this poses safety issues.

Hearing an approaching vehicle serves as a warning to pedestrians. The rumble of a vehicle's internal combustion system helps people stay aware of their surroundings. Electric cars only emit a faint hum, which can sometimes be inaudible. In a bustling city, some sounds may even drown out the sound of EVs.

The Quiet Nature of EVs

"A great leap for mankind” it may have been, but surely the gnarliest air caught on our lunar cousin - aside from take-off of the lunar lander for its return to earth - was that of John Young piloting the 002 Lunar Rover during the Apollo 15 Mission.

That is of course, if you believe that humans every really landed on the moon ...

Pared down? Open top? Bare bones?

These might be fitting terrestrial terms for the LRV (Lunar Roving Vehicle), and although it does evoke something of the T-bucket hotrod, or even a railtrack service vehicle or "handcar", the design development for this space buggy took a much more meandering route than the relatively short excursions enjoyed by the vehicle itself once it finally got moon dust between its tyre treads.

Some tyre treads they were, with the LRV wheels sporting a chevron pattern made of ... titanium, of course.

Not always designed for the demands of lunar exploration, tyres remain an important consideration for Electric Vehicles. A firmer compound tyre, although trading something of the 'stickiness' craved by racetrack enthusiasts, results in higher efficiency with a focus on an incremental contribution towards the bike's range - an important metric for most EVs.

With this in mind Evoke chose the K97 Tubeless Radial model by King Tyre for our Urban S and Classic models.

Performance

Essentially a rolling chassis with seats, the raw simplicity of the Apollo Mission era LRV brings to mind early hotrods, although instead of a gargling V8 engine, perhaps only the pulsing sonar like beeps of its forward based navigational equipment were all that was heard beyond the crunch of titanium tyre on dirt and the gentle whine of four 190W electric motors (one powering each wheel).

With a top speed recorded by Eugene Cernan (Apollo 17 mission) of just 18kph, co-pilot at the time Harrison Schmitt, in the passenger seat may well have screamed a desire to increase the vehicle's speed, but then this was space, so well, go figure. The Lunar Rover achieved a total mileage of approximately 36km on the Apollo 17 mission with a single uninterrupted trip of 20km. This making use of its two 36 volt batteries (non-rechargeable) each with a capacity of 121 Ah for a total of 242 Ah.

Far from the moon's surface, but not forgetting legal speed limits here on planet earth, the Evoke Urban Classic reaches a top speed of 140km/h by way of its 96V rear hub mounted motor.

Unlike being shot into space, don't expect a countdown timer or lengthy launch sequence, as the Evoke Urban delivers all its power from zero rpm and sits ready to go in total silence with zero vibration or vehicle noise. Like all motorcycles, the bike has a kill switch immobilising the engine should someone mistake the bike's silent resting state with that of a gas bike's prior to ignition.

But like G-forces necessary to leave earth's atmosphere, the Evoke Classic has acres of torque evident by a rear end that squats under acceleration as the bike taps into 200 Nm of forward propulsion. All of which is released seamlessly, without the need for a single gear shift.

Shown here in our new for 2023, 'Rogue Red' finish, this year's model builds upon an almost 30% increase in the capacity and output of our new battery pack as part of multiple improvements to its manufacture we made in 2022.

With 2023 upgrades featuring laser welded prismatic cells with highly robust solid plate connections, the bike now boasts a capacity of 10.0 kWh, increasing range and decreasing journey times by offering up more usable power between charges without sacrificing reliability. In short we beefed up our battery and we did it the right way.

Fenders proved to be a serious issue for the lunar rover as they functioned to keep moon dust and debris away from important vehicle components and in truth they represent its only form of bodywork. This in part contributed to a vehicle weight of just 210kg, with the ability to carry an additional payload (or carrying capacity) of 230kg.

Referred to as a naked bike, the Urban Classic for sake of practicality includes panelling and bodywork that enshrouds key components while bringing a degree of comfort to rider and passenger (although we haven't tried riding it in spacesuits). The Urban Classic has a curb weight of 209kg and can carry a rider and passenger with a combined weight of 200kg.

The Lunar Rover's instrument panel was not dissimilar to a studio mixing desk, such was the array of switches, dials and signal lights. The vehicle's operators underwent countless hours of training to familiarise themselves with its design that despite appearance was intended to be simple and relatively fool-proof.

Being something of a busy design, more commonly in today's era screens place the most important information front and centre with additional data located peripherally. Speed and power output become the two most important data points with secondary information appearing in relation to its perceived rank or importance.

For 2023 Evoke have upgraded our display screen and added new backlit switches, pairing both with black handlebars to offering a completely revised cockpit. With improvements to usability and performance, it's also a little easier on the eye, but mostly due to the option of day and night modes and increased luminosity.

As a scientific mission, the Lunar Rover's job was to collect both rock and gas samples and make observations in a way that would have left moonwalkers trailing in their dust. As a moon scout, the Rover Vehicle pinged data back to NASA that ensured careful tabs were kept on progress and indeed potential discoveries as they happened. Communication was also maintained to ensure broadcast content for terrestrial TV as millions looked on form the safety of their living rooms.

For 2023, The Urban Classic from Evoke Electric Motorcycles, features the addition of an Android owner app that allows for a more detailed understanding of the bike's core metrics even while out of the saddle. As a proprietary app, we ensure only essential information is displayed and things like location data we avoid out of a respect for rider privacy.

For the time being there's no shortage of parking space on the moon, yet initiatives were taken by the Lunar Rover's designers to ensure the vehicle could manoeuvre freely among craters and rocks bigger than its 14 inch ground clearance allowed. For this the vehicle made use of 4-wheel Ackerman steering to get in and out of even the tightest spots.

To aid riders of the Evoke Urban Classic in not entirely dissimilar situations or at least when space is at a premium, the Urban range from Evoke has a reverse gear, which is engaged only by holding the ride mode selector switch down for 5 seconds and then engaging both the sprung selector lever and engaging the throttle simultaneously (and gently, we would suggest) .

The Future

The Lunar Rover Vehicle existed as both a manned vehicle and one that made use of wheels to traverse across the moon's surface serving on three space missions with no major reported issues (literally one minor fender bender). Since that time of the Apollo era of spaceflight, vehicles that rove or indeed roam other planets have become unmanned and more recently plans are for aerial exploration vehicles like that designed for the skies above the surface of Mars.

The advantage of Electric Vehicles in such settings was perhaps best alluded to by Elon Musk in a recent appearance on a popular podcast. To paraphrase the great rocketeer himself, EVs offer a much higher degree of control and deal in nanoseconds in terms of commands sent to their final drive systems and indeed back again as something of a relay signal.

Pilot feedback (that received by way of a pilot's senses or physical contact with a vehicle) is nothing new, but having a readable, digital interface between wheels which serves as something akin to sensors and a central computer processing this information before making necessary adjustments in tenths of a second - making a convincing argument as to why the era of EVs soon gave rise to the birth of the autonomous vehicle.

In such a micro-managed and high stakes environment as an exploration mission to other planets, its exactly this aspect of the electric motor that helps provide the accuracy and assuredness that contribute towards mission success. Although space flight still relies on rocket fuel, once within a planet's orbit and in touching distance the baton is passed to EVs to handle the detailed surveying and collection of samples that help inform our understanding of our planetary neighbours.

While efforts have been made to reduce or supplement the use of combustible fuels to literally throw objects into space, the innovative backdrop of space travel remains a meritocracy between traditional means of propulsion and fresh new approaches.

In mentioning Musk, we might be inclined to acknowledge the Tesla that is currently orbiting the atmosphere of Mars. The question of whether it will ever see service on the planet itself perhaps depends on the realisation of Elon's seemingly boundless ambition. Should that ever be the case, it can't be too long before a two wheeled vehicle joins it. For now development of road going earth vehicles also sees great potential in electric power sources for the ease of use, accuracy and control they offer their users.

While the future of our species may be in space and on planets other than our own, the opportunities for advancement in terrestrial means of transportation continues and we at Evoke relish the opportunity to be part of earth's future EV offerings. Ford built cars that were functional in the extreme and he built them quickly on the back of demand he in part created by popularising the automobile as a mass market product, striving to make it available to the greatest possible number of consumers and by that he made simple cars that lasted and he made them as cheaply as possible.

The Model T was Ford's formative model and although a little janky by today's standards it was the car that Ford built its legacy upon. With 15 million units sold and a production run of almost two decades, it's earned it's place in the history books as the first mass market automobile.

Ford's luxury line didn't appear until 1922 with the purchase of Lincoln, but prior to this date and by way of its formative product, Ford had elevated the driving experience to rival that of comparative means, namely rail track, aviation or the horse and cart - the latter which the automobile now sought to replace.

Evoke jumped at the chance to be on show at the recent Beijing International Motorcycle Exhibition (Motor China) and despite a slightly sheltered spot, foot traffic between halls meant our Oceanic Blue Urban Classic and Obsidian Black 6061-GT caught the eye and provided a steady influx of curious and slightly incredulous passersby.

The first question, as if in doubt from those approaching the stand and drawn to the iridescent tone of the MK18 on show?

“It’s electric ..?!”

Electric motorcycles were still quite a rare sight at Beijing International Motorcycle Exhibition and notably what fit this description at the show other than our road-going models were those building on the success of light electric dirt bikes and catering to those looking to experience all the same thrills but less of the mess with the drastically reduced service needs of battery powered machines. This in part explained the slightly stunned expression of those passing by the Evoke Motorcycles Stand and drawn to our show bikes.

How to Calculate Range on an Electric Motorcycle

If you've ever wondered how manufacturers calculate and estimate range, read on to find out how.

Part 1 of 3.

Range estimations on the sticker of the new Tesla or other electric vehicle seem to baffle a lot of people, and with a bit of basic math, you'll see how close, or how far, manufacturers can push their range estimations to "look good" on marketing.
There are a few different ways to estimate your range:

MPGe
Wall to wheels
Historical "on-the-fly" algorithm

On this post, we'll talk about how to utilize the MPGe statistic on most electric vehicles to understand its efficiency and use that to estimate off of theorical battery pack capacities provided from the manufacturer.
MPGe The first metric you'll need to understand how range is calculated is your electric vehicle's efficiency. Efficiency is measured in watt-hours per km, or more commonly written as wh/km. This means that for each kilometer traveled, your electric vehicle will, on average, consume xx watt hours of the battery pack. You will also see all manufactures listing the total capacity of the battery pack, measured in watt hours, and due to their large sizes, mostly listed in kilowatt hours, or kwh.
Most 4 wheel electric cars will see efficiency numbers of 130 wh/km to 250 wh/km, while most full speed electric motorcycles like the Urban Classic will see 30 wh/km to 60 wh/km. From this metric alone, you can see that 2 wheeled electric motorcycles will consume less battery capacity for each km traveled, meaning they're more efficient that electric cars. You can easily convert this metric to miles by multiplying by 1.6 to get wh/mile, which will be required to get your eMPG. Now it's a simple conversion to calcuate your efficiency numbers to an equivalent MPG format.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses an established energy standard of 115,000 BTUs (British thermal units) per gallon of gasoline. Simplified, this means that if you ignited 1 U.S. gallon of unleaded gasoline, it would generate that much heat. To create that same amount of heat, 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity would be required. Thus, 1 gallon of gasoline generates the same ‘heat energy’ as 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
If an electric vehicle is able to travel 100 miles on 33.7 kWh of electricity (the energy equivalent of 1 gallon of gasoline), it would be rated with an MPG equivalency of 100 MPGe. Let’s say a different electric car can travel that same 100 miles while using 32 kWh, slightly less than the previous example. This second electric car would receive a rating of 105 MPGe since it’s more efficient. Just like traditional MPG ratings for a gasoline-powered vehicle, the EPA rates MPGe across city, highway, and combined fuel economy.
So with your efficiency estimate of, for example, 30 wh/km, you will need to convert that to wh/mile by multiplying by 1.6 and get 48wh/mile. To convert to eMPG, you'll need to calcuate your consumption of 100 miles, so multiply by 100, to get 4800 wh per 100 miles, or 4.8 kwh per 100 miles. The EPA rates 100 miles of travel utilizing 33.7 kwh as 100 MPGe, so the 30 wh/km electric motorcycles would be 7.02x more efficient, giving an MPG equivalent of 702 MPGe.
The above exercise is mainly working backwards, and if a manufacturer gives you the MPGe, you can calculate efficiency. Then to get estimated range, you would need to take the total capacity of the vehicle and divide by the efficiency to get an estimated total range of the vehicle.
For e.g. if the electric motorcycle has a 10 kwh battery, or 10,000 wh, divided by 30 wh/km gives you a total of 333.3 km of total range, or 208 miles.

UK Evoke Motorcycles' riders can now apply for the £1500 (~$2000 USD) grant for your electric motorcycle

Evoke Electric Motorcycles, in partnership with Amped Motorcycles Ltd. is now approved for the United Kingdom’s Plug In Motorcycle Grant. Evoke Motorcycles’ owners will be able to receive up to 20% of the total cost of the vehicle up to 1,500 GBP (~$2,000 USD) off the MSRP of the electric motorcycle.

The eligibility of the grant is processed by the UK partner and automatically deducted for the cost of the vehicle, thereby making the purchase experience more enjoyable.

Really — if I had a connected doorbell I would have to lure the dog away from the door to be able to hear the person, or the speaker would have to be really loud. I would have to have the dog treat dispenser too or the doorbell wouldn’t work. Plus the dog loves chatting with people at the door, I couldn’t take that away from him, it would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Evoke Motorcycles : Could you tell us and our readers a little bit about yourself? Jesús de Juan Montoya : As a young boy, I started to tinker with motorcycles. I think I was 14 years old, if not younger when I was tightening screws and regulating my carburetor. My passion for motorcycles grew and continued to grow throughout my childhood. Thanks to my family supporting my dream, in 1996 I started my first motorcycle business in Melilla, selling important brands such as Ducati and Harley-Davidson - that was 25 years ago.

As I mentioned earlier, my passion isn't just for the machines. I love riding my motorcycles. In 2008, 2009 and 2010, I and another 100 motorcyclists toured with Raid through Morocco. The experience was unforgettable.

Additionally I love to modify my motorcycles. My favourite bikes to modify to date have been the H-D 1200 Cup and the Royal Enfield Green Fly. Both have gained international recognition. They have opened the door to a niche in the market of bike manufacturers in Spain.
Evoke Motorcycles : With such a diverse background in gas motorcycles, why have you chosen electric motorcycles as your new adventure? Jesús de Juan Montoya: I saw the direction that the world of the electric motorcycle was going. Over a number of years, I became interested and started gathering information and learning about different brands. When the time was right, I decided to launch my business.

Evoke Motorcycles: Do you have any future projects with Evoke Motorcycles?

Jesús de Juan Montoya: At the moment, EVOKE MOTORCYCLES is preparing to launch its bikes in Spain, under the umbrella of GMI, Grupo Moto Ibérica, which I have the honour of leading. Evoke Moto Spain will have its headquarters in Madrid, in Calle Infanta Mercedes 13, where you will be able to test and purchase electric motorbikes.

With the backing of Evoke Motorcycles, we are also establishing a national distribution network that will focus mainly on the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Malaga, Bilbao; and in Portugal, Lisbon and Porto.

CANbus Plays Critical Role in Electric Vehicles

Communication between components and systems is common in today’s heavy-duty vehicles and equipment with CANbus (Controller Area Network). As technology continues to evolve, so have CANbus systems and the components which are connected to them. Because of its communication capabilities, CANbus plays a critical role in electric vehicles. With the latter, it is especially important for components and systems to communicate with one another to ensure safe and efficient operation.

How is CANbus being utilized with battery powered systems and battery chargers? The battery and the charger are very dependent on each other. Typically, the battery is the first largest expense in electric vehicles. So when we look for a battery solution, we want to make sure you are getting the most return on investment when you purchase our vehicle. What that means is getting the best performance out of it, the most life out of it, and the most cost-effective solution.New Paragraph

If you think back to lead-acid batteries, because there were no electronics involved you really had to characterize the battery and be as efficient as possible on that characterization. Whereas now that you have the flexibility to scale how you want to use that battery and the performance of the battery due to the communication path which most often is CAN communication, you are able to scale how and when the battery is doing what it’s doing.
As an example, with a lead acid battery, if you are scaling down on capacity, you could tell the capacity is going down in voltage, but you can't control how much power that battery is able to give out. With a lithium-ion battery and charging, you could tell the system you want to cap it at a certain point, and it will abide by that.
This is essential and important to the total cost of the battery because you could either enhance performance, or you could manipulate the battery through the communications to optimize the life at the expense of some performance. It gives you flexibility.

Evoke Electric Motorcycles, one of the industry leaders in electric motorcycles and smart communication EV technologies, is proud to announce the addition of a new member to its Advisory Board: Dr. Makarand Jawadekar (Mak)
Mak received his Ph.D. (Pharmaceutics) from the University of Minnesota in 1982. Since then, he commenced work at Pfizer, Inc. inGroton-New London Connecticut for 28 consecutive years. He opted for an early retirement in 2010; he was a Director, Portfolio Management & also served as a V.P. of APAG Colleague Resource Group (CRG). During his career at Pfizer, he was responsible for Drug Delivery Technology Assessment function involving external ‘Drug Delivery’ technologies. Pfizer Global R&D specifically includes Solids R&D, Drug Product formulation/ Dosage Form Development/ Drug Delivery development, Clinical Trials Supply Manufacturing, Scale-up/TechTransfer & Research Pharmacy functions. He helped create various Pharma R&D Partnerships, JVs, and Collaborations. He also held leadership role within R&D for many years. As a bench Scientist, he had an opportunity to work on many challenging Clinical/commercial formulations such as ZOLOFT Tablets, ZITHROMAX Tablets/ Sachet and many more dosage forms. He also worked on many “Life Cycle Management “projects for Pfizer’s established commercial products. Mak has presented at many professional meetings and has participated in various Panel Discussions/Round Tables around the globe. Since 2010, he has been serving on many Advisory positions an Board of a few companies. In 2006, US President George W. Bush invited him to accompany him on his trip to India in 2006. He accompanied Presidents of Pfizer R & D to India on 2 occasions (2007 John LaMattina, 2009 Martin Mackay/ Rod MacKenzie), where he helped Pfizer R & D create Partnerships with Indian Multinational Pharma companies for R & D Collaborations and also represented at the BIOASIA conference in Hyderabad in 2009. During February 2018, he worked with Mr. Tonino Lamborghini, Chairman, Tonino Lamborghini S.p.A. from Italy in creating Strategic Collaborations in India, working through India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He accompanied Congressman Todd Rokita (R), Indiana, on a Business mission to India in January 2019; where there were many bilateral discussions took place between Indian companies & US Congressman. Congressman Todd Rokita bestowed Mak with a US “Congressional Honor” in November 2019, which became part of the US Congressional record. Mak received an Honorary “Doctorate of Science” degree from DYP Bombay University in 2011, in honor of his very successful Pfizer career. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of NanoViricides, Cardax Pharma & PreveCeutical Medical Inc. & on a Non-Profit organization from NY, ABILITIES Inc. How to Register an Urban Classic in California

Documents Needed:

1. Application for Registration in California ( https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/uploads/2020/06/reg343.pdf ) 2. Certificate of Origin/ Title - OFFICIAL 3. Verification of Vehicle (You will need to get the bike to the DMV for them to do the verification. Its not an inspection. They will ask you several questions about the bike, the motor, the battery, things like that) 4. Certificate of Conformity 5. Port of Landing 6. Customs Clearance – VERY IMPORTANT

Things you should also bring:

1. Drivers License/Motorcycle License 2. Proof of Insurance 3. ISF Form (not needed but bring it just in case) 4. STG Logistics/Carotrans paperwork (this is NOT considered Customer Clearance, but bring it just in case) 5. Invoice, proof of payment (Proof you paid for the bike from China) 6. Credit Card , the fees in California are high. Here is a breakdown of the fees. Total came out to be exactly $715.

A fter you pay for registration, they will give you a temporary permit , which will last a few months. In my case, it lasted 4 months. After it expires, you will need to go back to the DMV and get an extension if you have not received your plates. The extension will be for another 2-3 months. You have to wait for Sacramento to process and send you your plates in the mail. THAT’S IT �55357;�56842;

You will need the OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN . It cannot be a copy . You will also need the Customs Clearance paperwork. This can be a copy. You can just print it out and bring it with you to the DMV. DMV will not touch your paperwork if you do not have these two documents. You can get the customs clearance paperwork from the broker who helped you get it out of the port. In this case, I spoke with someone from CaroTrans who helped me find a broker and she just forwarded the document to me. This is how the customs clearance document title will look like:

In summary, just know that there are additional fees that you will have to pay Carotrans and STG logistics to get it out of the port and out of the warehouse. The total amount to get it out of the port for me was $1025.57 and the total to get it out of the warehouse was $240. The total to get it registered was $715.

In total, I had to pay $1980.57 in administrative shipping fees, taxes, and registration.

Brazilian Software Engineer in Beijing

Evoke Motorcycles has an excellent pool of international talents. They have contributed a lot of excellent ideas, solutions, and future vision in design, planning, and execution. They are not only the leaders in their respective fields but also the pushers of smart green transportation.

Today we interviewed Eric, our software engineer from southern Brazil, and listened to him talk about why he traveled thousands of miles to China, to Evoke Motorcycles, and his thoughts on the intelligent software part of the next-generation motorcycle experience.

Document: 1. Why China? Because my field is electronic, and everything I was buying in Brazil close to my studies was coming from China. So I decided to come to point of source.
2. Why Evoke Motorcycles? Well, I just moved to Beijing to continue my studies. And I was looking for some opportunities where I could do the things that I really like. Which is programming for electronic devices. So when I was looking for this opportunity, I found Evoke Motorcycles. In the job description, it seems that I wrote that to my self. I decided to come here because it was an opportunity I could actually work on a project and see what progress is going to. And it’s really fast—going to the real market.
3. Why Software on Motorcycles? There are many differences between a gas motorcycle and an electric motorcycle. In our case, we actually have a computer going with wheels. So, all these things, motor, in our case we have batteries. And the battery management system is necessary to have software behind it. That carries information and controls the motor and takes care of safety. We can compare these with a human body, That we have a brain and a lot of other members. So, in our case, our motorcycles, we have those members. So we need a brain, we need to get information and take the actions. To control, all the things that we have.
4. What Project Now? I am part of the software development team. One thing that we are working on in the software development team, is to use inertial sensors in our motorcycles. To detect crashing, and to detect the direction the motorcycle is going. And then, for example, some simple stuff. Like, turn off the signal light when the turn is over.
5. What Vision for Smart Motorcycles? In this new technology that we are using for our new electronic control unit. we are thinking about how we can be more than just a vehicle, and actually, be connected to our customers’ life. For example, use some conceptual internet of things. And technology like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi to give more information from the motorcycle to the customer. And allowing them to change some parameters very easily on smartphone applications.

Here is the Story

It was Monday, a sudden drop in temperature hit Beijing and I arrived at the office shivering and recovering from the weekend’s laziness. After sipping the last drops of a cup of hot chocolate, I saw Sebastian rise from his seat and declared what is written above in the title.

“Wait a minute. Who?” My instinct reacted first and asked the question. “What color does he want for Urban Classic? 6061 is coming soon but even a transcendent existence like him has to wait until our engineers finish testing, right? Or maybe he is willing to accelerate the process? By the way, if he orders 10 bikes, what about the other three apostles?” My reason took the high ground soon and triggered my curiosity. In 5 seconds, I had already been wondering if Jesus could actually fit his halo into a helmet. After all, remember kids, safety always comes first. “No,” Sebastian interrupted and swept away my imagined bubbles in the air, “it was Mr. Jesus who ordered ten bikes. He is our dealer in Spain. A nice guy, no halo though.”

Logic of Testing

Evoke Motorcycles, as an explorer and leader in the electric motorcycle industry, always puts improving customer experience as a top priority. To achieve the continuity of experience improvement, the never-ending work is R&D and testing. We have adopted a cycle structure that includes constantly absorbing various improvement opinions, proposing several experimental designs, testing and accepting on the road, and combining the supply chain to determine how to stably improve in production.

We collected feedback from customers all over the world with different driving environments and climatic conditions and then dedicated it to the proposal of experimental design.
Experimental designs are always exciting and Evoke Motorcycles' global team of engineers can always come up with interesting designs. We will use creative methods to implement the best designs in the workshop, and then test them on the road.
The importance of testing on the road is self-evident. Safety comes first. Our new ideas must not affect the original safety design, such as interfering with the rearview mirror or the stability of the vehicle when riding. Second, the new changes should be durable enough. Repeated tests can ensure that there will be no disturbing wobbling noise of a part after riding over a speed hump. Of course, the new design must be implemented to improve the pain points of users ultimately. The engineers responsible for testing Evoke Motorcycles are also experienced motorcycle enthusiasts. They will ensure that everything achieves the expected results.

Professional testing requires professional personnel. Because all this requires not only strong professional knowledge, rich experience in debugging hardware or software, and common sense of motorcycle driving, but also agility and decisiveness on the spot when the motorcycle starts losing its balance at thrilling speed. 1. How different it is between designing & testing an aircraft and a motorcycle? Same and different. In the nutshell, it is like to cook good coffee or hot chocolate - I like both by the way. The natural laws are the same, approach, and features are different. However, I would not say that the design of a motorcycle is so simple stuff. Many other features come first here. We aim to make new motorcycle models properly working and with some new solutions fast (particularly for electrical bikes), it should be in the cost range, safe, comfortable, and exciting to ride. 2. How many years have you been riding a motorcycle? How many different motorcycles have you ridden? Well, I bought on saved money my first bike when I was 11 years old. It was a very old Russian bike. I repaired it definitely more time than riding. Frankly speaking, Russia is not the best place for motorcycles, the season is really short. After I moved to Beijing, I have ridden and tested an uncountable amount of motorbikes. Right now, I am confident to ride on anything that has two wheels in our workshop.
3. Do you think testing is important? Why? Of course, testing is important. It is not only about safety and specs. Test ride also highlights the ergonomics and the character of the bike. It helps a lot to speed up the design process.
4. After new ideas are installed on the bike, how many tests need to be done to make sure it’s working? New ideas definitely taking more time, more tests as well. Such as the firmness, durability, performance in peaceful or intense driving, and most importantly, what if someone rides like a nut? We try to cover all the possibilities. However, there is still a risk of whether customers will like it or not.
5. Have you ever encountered any dangerous situation while testing a bike? How did you handle it? So far, I haven't experienced super dangerous situations while testing. Small failures did happen because, in certain test situations, motorcycles are pushed to or even beyond the daily use limit, especially in a pressure test. Once I was testing one of our prototypes, by the way, it would be super nice, the aim was to drain the battery at top speed cruising without an electric limiter and see the bike’s reaction. Around the end of the test, one component got overheat but I had to maintain some speed to cool it down with airflow. I managed to ride back without igniting anything. We do this so you don’t have to experience an emergency.
By the way, there is a Frankenstein bike locked in our basement and you will never see it because it failed the pressure test.

Hainan Confirms Ban on Oil-fuelled Vehicle Sales by 2030

In a press conference on 8 June，2020, China’s southern island province of Hainan confirmed a ban on ICE vehicle sales by 2030, making Hainan the first province in China to set a timetable by which the sales of ICE vehicles will be ended. The provincial government also vowed to shift the whole island to clean energy, in an effort to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
Hainan has been working strategically to phase out vehicles running on fossil fuels, with the governor of the province first indicating intentions to ban ICE vehicle sales in 2018. In 2019, the provincial government released its New Energy Vehicles Development Plan and proposed a progressive strategy, aiming to ensure that all private vehicles will run on clean energy by 2030. The government is also scheduled to build an extensive network of vehicle-charging points across the island, with the total number of charging poles reaching 940,000 by 2030.
Rich in clean energy resources, including solar, wind and nuclear power, Hainan aims to build a reliable 80% clean electricity system by 2030. The electrification of the vehicle fleet is the starting point and charging infrastructure for EVs using clean energy is highlighted as a key target. Roskill’s sustainability analysis shows that the lower emissions (or total lack of emissions) in the ‘use’ stage of a BEV, outweigh the additional emissions caused in the ‘production’ stage after a reasonable period operation, compared to an ICE vehicle.

Hainan’s plan to end ICE vehicle sales by 2030 is forecast to further boost demand for batteries and battery materials, although Beijing remains reluctant to set a date for a nationwide ban on sales of ICE vehicles. Roskill believes that, on a regional or national basis, the penetration rate of EVs will follow an uneven trajectory across different markets, driven by varying levels of local government support, commitments to the development of charging infrastructure, and the market position of manufacturers with leading positions in the EV markets. Known as a testing case for progressive policies, Hainan is leading the way among provincial-level governments, although how far similar policies propagate in other Chinese provinces over the coming decade will be critical to EV growth in the Chinese market. Central Chinese government will also need to think seriously about the effect of a nationwide transition to EVs, weighing up the impacts on other key industries and petroleum demand in China.

Is Public Charging Stations & Ultra-fast Charging the Key to 2 Wheel EV Adoption?

Believe it or not, but there is a lot of information behind it ...

To fully understand mass adoption of 2 wheeled electric vehicles, one must understand the use cases that each vehicle will endure; electric motorcycles, electric scooters and electric mopeds and how their rider's will feel with the current or future charging infrastructure that is available to them. Currently, with the rapid expansion of public charging stations, many OEMs are jumping on board with charging station support for Level 2 or DC fast charging that makes owning an electric motorcycle or electric scooter that much more convenient.

Electric Motorcycles: Short to mid range commutes within cities, long distance cross country trips, short haul group rides to the country side.
Electric Scooters: Short range commutes within cities
Electric Mopeds: Neighborhood runs, grocery getting, last mile transport
Private vs Public Charging Stations; the next generation of electric motorcycle and electric scooters are going to need a mixture of both in order to feel comfortable enough to make the purchase and move up to mass adoption of electric 2 wheeled vehicles, but smaller scale EVs have a huge advantage that in many parts of the world, in that fast charging can sometimes be achieved by regular household power outlets or potentially Level 2 charging only.

Many places in Asia and Europe run off 220v - 240v at 10 - 16A, which provide 2 - 3kw of power comfortably from the main power grids, which allow smaller battery packs to charge potentially quite fast. Level 2 charging stations at home or in the wild provide up to 7kw of power, which for many electric motorcycles would suffice for current onboard charger technology to get the charge time down to a couple of hours. There is also an influx of chargers capable of charging at 22kw and more, which for some higher end electric motorcycles could pull the charge time down to 15 - 30 mins.

For those on the bandwagon saying that the current Public Charging Station system mimics too much of the old "Gas Station" system, I agree to some degree that no one likes going to the gas station and that we need to take more of a cell phone approach to charging our electric motorcycles, but taking a look at the use case for electric motorcycles and electric scooters, both of them require short to mid distances, potentially longer, and for those using electric motorcycles for pure leisure will need that infrastructure setup to fully enjoy their purchase. Even the city commuter on an electric scooter needs that infrastructure in a pitch to allow him or her to make that unexpected stop to the grocery store or by a friend's house to pick something up. Of course, normally we'll have the convenience of plugging in at night and waking up to a fully charged vehicle everyday.

With new battery cell and pack assembly technology, many companies are able to push the "ultra-fast" barrier of charging capability on EVs, and eventually we'll be able to take the outdated "Gas Station" system and make it our own. Tesla has already taken a more "lifestyle" approach to their Supercharging stations, and I predict a future of coffee shops, chill venues and small restaurants making charging not just a chore, but a place for electric motorcyclists and electric scooter riders to come together, share stories of their rides and misadventures, and meeting new enthusiasts joining the sport.

So we'll see in a few years time if we end up shifting our meet-up spot from that run down cafe to that new fast charging station on 5th and Main St.

The Future of Powersports: How will EVs fit into the Product Mix

What does the future hold for the retail powersports industry? Let's check it out ...

If you are asking yourself this, you probably already work in the powersport industry and don't need the definition. For the rest of the readers, powersports is a subset of motorsports encompassing motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles and personal watercrafts. For the purpose of this article, we'll be focusing mainly on the motorcycle side of things, mainly because they are the closest to becoming a reality when dealing with electrification. While there are electric ATVs, snowmobiles and PWC out there, they are far and few between and will make major strides once electric motorcycles are fully established.

As a side note, this article is purely speculative and documents the personal thoughts of an employee working at an electric motorcycle company, analyzing how our product line may fit into the retail business as we fight to occupy more floorspace at the dealership. The article will cover 3 aspects of the powersport retail business applicable to electric motorcycles, which are the margins, upsells and accessories and finally, repair and maintenance. This article will steer away from a direct comparison between internal combustion engine motorcycles, as the entire preface is to understand how electric motorcycles will integrate at the dealership level, and not displace traditional products at this time. Though moving forward, displacement at the brick-and-mortar level will be a natural progression until new retail models are established.

The first point to discuss is the implementation of margins with this new product line. Unable to speak on behalf of all electric vehicle OEMs, the general consensus is that we (electric motorcycle OEMs) understand dealers need margin to thrive, OEMs provide as much dealer margin as possible to incentivize, but new technology costs more. Those three phrases are inherently linked, but also somewhat in opposition. To be able to offer higher margins, COGS (cost of goods) needs to go down. With the reduction of maintenance, electric OEMs are also removing from the equation another profitable revenue stream from the dealers hands, so the question is, does the additional margin from the sale of the product warrant the reduction of maintenance revenue coming in over the lifetime of the customer? Probably not, but that’s not a bad thing, which I will explain in more detail below. Rest assured that OEMs understand the need to incentivize all parties in the equation and as we grow as an industry, COGS of batteries and power electronics will continue to drop year on year, and, at least from Evoke Motorcycles, those COGS reduction will get passed along to the dealers to keep the doors open while you build the community of electric riders.

Typically on a high moving gas motorcycle, distributors or OEMs may kick back 4 – 15% margins on the product, forcing the guys on the floor to scramble to include helmets, gloves and other gear into the deal. On the electric motorcycle side of the equation, those accessories are still part of the deal, only now you’re starting off with a 20 – 35% margin on the product to make things that much more appetizing. Add to the fact that a good chunk of the riders coming in for electric motorcycles are going to be new riders (since e-motorcycles don’t have the complexity of the clutch and multiple gears), it makes the safety accessories a must-buy to those entering the sport.

Additionally, moving to a vehicle that is completely digital allows for a whole heap of new accessories to upsell. On the fundamental side of things, you have your go-to safety gear, but as the industry grows and develops, new smart safety gear will begin becoming more prominent. Imagine selling smart helmets with HUDs that integrate directly with your electric motorcycle, having a 360 diagnostic view of your motorcycle right on the visor. Or selling smart riding boots that pair with your e-bike to light up as you engage your turn signals. Think about the margins you earn on a pair of riding boots, and triple those margins wherever you add in the word "smart".

Those accessories of the future don’t just stop at physical safety products, but will soon expand into the digital age. Imagine selling wallpapers for your electric motorcycle display screen, or charging a lump sum for a completely new digital gauge cluster skin. The dealer ends up making great margins on digital services along with the installation time of the technician to flash it onboard to the bike.

How about charging out 1.5 hour’s worth of labour for throttle map re-tuning, to get the perfect setup for the customer’s riding style. On a traditional ICE vehicle, that throttle re-map would take a lot longer, custom tuning hundreds of data points to tweak the bike’s A/F ratios for a customer. Now it’s as simple as opening up an app or laptop and adjusting sliders. Moving forward, what encompasses the idea of “good customer service” will evolve, making it easier to handle customer's expectations while spending less time on physical repairs.

Finally, the elephant in the room, repair and maintenance. As many people know, the electric motorcycle only has a few moving parts that make up the power train component. This includes the electric motor and the final drive; everything else that is required to make motive power is all electronic. The act of moving electrons from the battery and turning it into motive force is really an amazing accomplishment of mankind. What that means from the dealer is that there are no more oil changes, valve adjustments, bottom end rebuilds, gasket replacements, transmission rebuilds, coolant refills, and so much more. This means that from the consumer end of things, electric vehicles are much more reliable overall than their gas counterparts. BUT that doesn’t mean they’re maintenance free! The misconception is that electric motorcycles function exactly like a mobile phone, set it and forget it. While the mobile phone and electric motorcycle share some overlap when it comes to battery technology, the major variable is the discharge rates and environmental conditions the battery is put through on a daily basis. Electric motorcycle batteries require periodic balancing and safety checks to ensure its working at prime optimum levels. Add to this all the other components that electric motorcycles share with motorcycles and you’ll be seeing your electric motorcycle customer sooner than you think. At the end of the day, beyond the standard oil changes and coolant flushes, everything else on a fossil fuel burning motorcycle usually falls under repairs, and repairs by nature are accidents that no one plans

So how will electric motorcycles fit into the future of the powersport retail industry? I believe dealers are going to make good margin retailing e-motorcycles to new riders, and new riders are going to love the simplicity and low maintenance of them that will impact overall sales volume. The upsells and accessories for e-motos are going to be wider, with more selection for the dealer to sell, while customers are going to love the variety and future connectivity to their newly purchased e-motorcycle. And finally, the dealer's service centers are going to go through an evolution from working on purely mechanical components to a more technologically savvy technician that is able to provide greater service to customers by spending less time monkeying around with hard parts, and more time digitally diagnosing through a tablet and re-flashing chipsets to get customers on the road again. That sounds like a win-win-win to me.

In some countries the use of electric vehicles has been a way to combat climate change, since gas powered vehicles contribute to air pollution. China uses most liquid fuels to transport goods and passengers by road and Australia use some in the aviation sector. EVs will become increasingly important in the next few years as they will replace gas powered vehicles. This move is being driven by the concerns on climate change, technological changes and governmental regulations.

A growing number of countries which include USA, China and so forth have created targets for the electric vehicle industry and the electric vehicle sales. China wants EVs to account for 40 per cent of the country’s auto sales by 2025.

In the EV industry, there are two main countries in the forefront, which are China and Norway. China leads the world in the sales of electric vehicles and their market keeps on growing every year. In 2017 alone, more than 600,000 EVs were sold and this was about an increase of 70 per cent for the sales in 2016. As for Norway, more than half of the cars that were sold in 2017 were EVs. In China electric cars will be part of their war on pollution, as companies like Volkswagen have invested $10 billion for relevant technology and plans to manufacture more than 1.5 million electric cars by 2025.

It’s not only cars that are going electric, some companies are already manufacturing electric motorcycles for commercial use. Norway is planning to make all short flights which are less than 2hrs to be operated by electric flights. The EV industry is not just changing the world, but making it a place.

Safe Riding and Battery Management in Winter

How to ride, what to wear and what to know during winter. Let's go over it together ...

Lithium ion batteries mostly power electric motorcycles, and these batteries don’t do well in extreme or severe weather conditions. Since winter is around the corner, and most riders would not be riding their bikes as much, it is ideal for an individual who uses an electric motorcycle to know measures to take when storing the batteries.

The batteries of electric vehicles are the most relevant part and they sometimes cost more than a quarter of the price of the vehicle, especially in the case of motorcycles. Evoke Motorcycles use Lithium Ion Batteries, which happen to be the better option when it comes to EV. They are super lightweight and durable, if taken care of properly one would enjoy its complete lifecycle without an abrupt clutter. So here are some tips to storing your batteries:

1) EV batteries are best stored in a cool dry place, and far from flammable materials.

2) In extreme freezing temperatures, one should make sure the battery is stored in a room temperature, preferably nothing less than 15°C (59°F).

3) If lithium batteries are left flat for a period of time in a fully discharged state, they may no longer be functional. So, it is advisable to store your batteries within 40% to 50% charged.

4) If left for longer than 2 weeks at a time, it should be checked on and charged at least once a month within the range given above to prevent the battery from deteriorating and picking up perfectly from where it left off with no hidden surprises.

5) In situations where batteries happen to have been left in cold conditions, they shouldn’t be charged right away, but rather warmed to a room temperature before charging. The right way to do this is allowing the battery to sit and cool down in a room temperature, it might take a while for that to happen but using other dubious means to warm or defreeze the battery is dangerous and it could damage the battery. Charging a lithium battery in a frozen state is likely to damage the battery, lithium batteries should NEVER be charged in under 0°C (32°F) temperature.

For riders who wouldn’t let freezing temperatures stop them from riding their bikes in the cold weather, it is best if extra safety precautions are taken so as to shun any avoidable accidents in the winter season. Riders must wear special protective gear to shield them from the extreme cold weather.

1) Tight fit body suits (base layers) are advised so as to prevent cold gusty winds from entering any part of the suit and making contact with the body.

2) Wear warm gloves to make you comfortable enough to get a firm grip on the throttle. Heated grips and heated gloves are also a great option to increase your comfort.

3) Wear a reflective / hi-vis jacket or a brightly coloured one to keep you visible when riding; we all know during winter it doesn’t get very bright most times, and it gets dark pretty quickly. So, to avoid being caught off guard with sudden darkness or fog, it is better to get a reflective jacket to keep you on the safer side.

4) As a rider, one should make sure the headlights are bright enough, aimed properly at the road and kept clean to see the road better when dark.

5) Unlike usual favourable conditions, your level of awareness should be highly increased and reflexes a bit sharper, as other pedestrians and drivers are also struggling to get through the weather, especially in foggy and snowy days.

6) Taking short breaks to get rid of debris on visor in windy conditions is ideal as compared to trying to get them off while still riding.

7) To end with, as a rider it is most important to know your limits, your skills and your weakness. Winter season, as we already know, is not the best for riding so it is better to ride within your limits, and know you aren’t pushing yourself too much to get through such harsh conditions. If the conditions are severe for your comfort, take a break.
